It’s been four years since my best friend Brian passed away. We had just finished Thanksgiving Day dinner when I got the call. It was tragic. Thanksgiving will always serve to remind me of all the good times we shared and believe me I am very thankful for the friendship we shared. It will also remind me of the great sadness I felt on his passing. I loved him like a brother.
I first met Brian in 1969 my senior year. We both drove VW Bugs and were attending the first meeting of a new car club called the SGVA,(San Gabriel Valley Volkswagen Association) We immediately hit it off and soon became best of friends. Our friendship spanned nearly 40 years. We had a hell of a time!
It was Brian who first introduced me to the likes of writer, B. Hunter Thompson and Beat Generation writers Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg. He also turned me on to the totally outrageous humor of the National Lampoon, Monty Python, the Fireside Theater and Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. No, on second thought, I’m pretty sure that I introduced Brian to Zappa. Yep, Zappa and Budweiser.
Through the years Bri and I share a lot of life and a lot of laughs. we always had a good time when we were together. We always found some off the wall form of amusement. We brought out the creative side of each other and had our moments of inspiration, usually comical. we collaborated on several songs, such as ‘Ordinary Guy’ a disgruntled rednecks lament on life, ‘Big Murly’ a parody about Brian the gruff and drunken truck drivin’ man, ‘Disco Clown’ a little ditty bout John Travolta, ‘Sun Fun’ a Beach Boys parody about a low-riding surfer named Ruben, a tribute to John Wayne called ‘It’s a Good Thing You Ain’t Apache,’ and many more.
Yes Brian and I were quite a team. I guess you could say we were the Lennon & McCartney of crude comedy. Yeah, Sausedo & Muldrow! Good old S&M. Brian would certainly find humor in that!
I lost my ‘brother from another mother” on Thankgiving Day 2008, when he lost a punishing battle with life.
Farewell old friend… You are missed…
